Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
