Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
