The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Jabs
Under a tenth of individuals that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, states the global health agency as it publishes its inaugural advice on the medications.
Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer access to GLP-1 medication.
Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.
"The new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can help people shift considerable body mass, explains the agency.
GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity
Even under the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.
The advice urges countries and companies to increase availability, via approaches such as patent sharing.
The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.
How Obesity Jabs Operate
These medications replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so individuals reduce food intake.
Individuals typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.
Evidence indicates patients may see weight return within a year of stopping the medication, when their normal hunger come back.
To be carrying excess weight raises your likelihood for contracting diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain cancers.
Excess weight impacts individuals in all nations and was associated with millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
