The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
